The Holbrook Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 19 new members into its program at Holbrook Middle-High School on Thursday. Students in grades 10-12 were honored for their academic achievements and their contributions to the Holbrook community and beyond.
The inductees were Ifeanyichukwu Aniemeke, Jayden Cadet, Gianna Costa, Michaela Costa, Kaitlyn Currey, Zanayah Dasilva, Chelsea Domingo, Andrew-Phillip Gabriel, Gadaina Gabriel, Aiden Molloy Lamonda, Krishna Patel, Naymiah Paul, Yamely Pierre, Jazel Pires, Ameera Rahman, Eliza Rund, Roleesha St. Jean, LanAnh Tran, and Isabella Velarde.
Each one of them held a candle, lit it, and pledged to maintain high scholastic standing, to be a courageous leader, and to give themselves freely to service to others. Then, one by one, they walked across the stage in the auditorium and received their certificates declaring their membership in the program.
“I feel accomplished,” said Junior Jayden Cadet after the ceremony. “I feel like I’ve actually taken my first steps towards achieving my own thing. All the hours I’ve been studying, all the hours I put in helping out at the food pantry, it’s just all accumulated into this one achievement.”
Graduating senior members were also recognized for their achievements in the NHS by receiving gold stoles to be worn during their graduation ceremony on Friday, June 5th. Each senior processed across the stage in a similar fashion to the new inductees, with their achievements in the organization being highlighted to the audience.
Holbrook Middle-High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society is a small part of the larger organization that recognizes high-performing high school students and their achievements both in the classroom and in their communities. Those achievements are recognized based on the program’s four core pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Current members and officers of the NHS spoke about each of these pillars and their importance throughout the ceremony. Ayane White, president of Holbrook’s Chapter of the NHS, spoke specifically about the pillar of Service and how impactful it was to the organization’s identity as each inductee and their acts of service were presented.
“Personally, for me, I think service is my favorite part about the NHS chapter,” said White. “It really shows how people are involved in their community and how people really have a hand in how the community runs. It was really great to see that many people signed up and got accepted into the National Honor Society. I’m just excited to see what they’re going to do and how they’re going to go on with their high school journeys.”
Students volunteer on a monthly basis at various locations such as the Holbrook Food Pantry. Students also participate in the Relay for Life, the Sean Joyce 5k race, Town Cleanup Day, and in fundraisers for the American Cancer Society. Each new member also has their own spin on community service, giving the group exciting new ways to help others.
“I think it’s always the variety of activities that they already volunteer in,” said Holbrook NHS Advisor Karin McDonough. “This year, two of our seniors, who were already members, volunteered with veterans organizations and at the Higashi school in town. Our juniors are involved in a wide variety of different religious organizations within the community. Similarly, with some of our newest inductees, the diversity in their backgrounds and the service that they’re involved in is just really impressive.”
With every member putting their heart into both their academics and community service, it shows just how much the NHS means to these students and the town of Holbrook. Whether they are just joining or are leaving after their graduation, this organization has helped shape them into strong individuals who can proudly represent Holbrook and make a difference in the world.
“As somebody who has been a part of this community for a long time, I grew up in Holbrook and have been working here for an extended period of time, one thing that we always have here are great kids,” said McDonough. “It’s what makes, I think, the town amazing and the school amazing. I think just seeing the little things that our kids do on a regular basis to make a positive impact, and knowing that that continues on for years to come in the future, is what keeps me motivated to be a part of it.”
